It was used as anemergency landing field by RAF aircraft returning from Burma. The first commercial flight into Goa Airport was on 1 June 1962 when Indian Airlines operated a DC-3 service between Bombay and Goa. In 1963, the airport was renamed after Maharaja of Goa Shri Pratapsinhji Scindia.
